We were taking the Young Women ice skating so out of curiousity I googled Ice Skating Lessons, and what I found was interesting. Did you know that when teaching someone to ice skate the first thing they teach you how to do is fall? What? I don’t think I’ll be needing lessons on that. I’m pretty sure I can figure that one out on my own! But it’s true. First you learn how to fall, then . . . are you ready? Then they’re going to teach you how to get up. That’s right. In case you aren’t sure what to do when you fall, you will be taught how to get up. So, in review, we learn first how to fall, 2nd how to get up, and then they teach how to stop. I’m wondering what I’m paying this instructor for. But, I’m guessing that learning how to stop will help limit how many times I fall, so naturally I will pay attention and learn how to stop. Now, finally, you would be taught how to move forward. Finally! Now isn’t that what we were planning to do when we decided to go ice skating?
So, as I was thinking about this process, I imagined a similar process happening not too many years ago, in heaven, as we were each preparing to leave the presence of our Father in Heaven. He knew we were going to fall (ie make mistakes), and that’s why He sent us a Savior. Just like I knew I would be falling out on that ice, Heavenly Father knew we would fall repeatedly throughout our lives. Perhaps we can imagine our Savior as the railing that we cling to or the friend that holds our hand,
supporting and encouraging us.
Remember: Success is just getting up one more time than you fall.
